Worthing suffer humiliating defeat against Margate at Nyewood Lane

Worthing were condemned to their sixth Bostik Premier League defeat of the season as they were beaten 5-0 to Margate, leading to Gary Elphick’s resignation.

The visitors took an early lead through Orlando Smith and extended their lead in the 35th minute when Jordan Chiedozie headed past Lucas Covolan.

Worthing, playing their first “home” game of the season at Bognor Regis Town’s Neywood Lane, looked better at the start of the second half.

But when Frannie Collin scored a free-kick against the run of play the home side capitulated allowing the Margate forward to completed a 13-minute hat-trick.

Margate made a flying start, taking the lead in just the sixth minute when Antone Douglas let Orlando Smith cut inside and curl into the top corner.

The visitors could have been three up within the first 15 minutes but Brazilian goalkeeper did well to block at the feet of Jordan Chiedozie before Frannie Collin dragged wide.

Chances for Margate were limited until the 35th minute when Collin’s deep cross picked out Chiedozie who rose higher than Elan Assiana to head past Covolan.

Four minutes before half-time both teams were reduced to ten men when Daniel Akinwunmi and Chiedozie were shown red for an altercation following a foul by Assiana.

Worthing improved in the early stages of the second half following a double substitution and change in formation, Fraser heading just wide in the 56th minute.

Kershaney Samuels’ sharp shot was saved at the near post by Margate goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley before Antone Douglas’ header was disallowed for a push on the defender.

Margate added a third in the 61st minute against the run of play when Alfie Young conceded a free-kick from which Collin curled around the wall into the bottom corner.

James Fraser was aggrieved to have not been awarded a free-kick in the build up to Collin’s second in the 67th minute, the Margate forward drilling into the bottom corner.

Collin completed a 13-minute hat-trick in the 74th minute when he was given the freedom of the pitch by the Worthing back three to round Covolan and squeeze in the fifth.

Both sides had chances before the end but it remained 5-0 as Worthing were condemned to their sixth Bostik Premier League defeat of the season.
