Worthing make it four wins in four with 3-1 victory over Dorking Wanderers
Worthing secured their second successive Bostik Premier Division win as they eased to a 3-1 victory over Dorking Wanderers at the third time of asking.
Harvey Sparks struck in the ninth minute to score his first goal of the season before first half substitute Reece Hallard added a second ten minutes before half-time.
In the early stages of the second half Kieron Pamment capitalised on a defensive error to net the third which effectively sealed the three points.
Matt Briggs snatched a late consolation for the visitors but the job was done for the Mackerel Men who continue to close the gap to the teams above them.
The game got off to a frantic start with Jimmy Wild, making his home debut having joined the club from Bognor Regis Town, prodding against the post in the fifth minute.
Moments later at the opposite end Joel Colbran threw himself in front of Lewis Taylor’s fierce effort to block after the Dorking midfielder had broken free in the box.
Wanderers goalkeeper Joshua Pelling clawed away Rhyle Ovenden’s drive from the edge of the box before Worthing took the lead in the ninth minute.
Reece Meekums surged down the right hand side and squared to Wild who scuffed into the path of Sparks, on hand to squeeze in his first goal of the season at the far post.
Dorking were unlucky not to equalise in the 29th minute when Taylor curled against the post and the ball rebounded onto Covolan who was fortunate to keep it out.
Keiron Pamment’s left-footed shot from distance was saved by Pelling who was able to get a fingertip to Sparks’ driven shot moments later.
The second goal was on its way though and from the resulting corner Sam Rents picked out substitute Hallard who rose highest to head into the top corner in the 36th minute.
Within four second half minutes Worthing added a third when Dorking captain Chris Boulter dallied in possession and Pamment capitalised to fire in on the half-volley.
Pamment should have scored again when Reuben Schneider picked him out in the box but he could only divert back into the path of the wing-back whose shot was saved.
Midway through the second half with Worthing dropping deeper and deeper Covolan had to be alert to tip James McShane’s skimming shot around the post.
In the 75th minute Covolan saved again, this time tipping Briggs’ free-kick over the bar after he curled up and over the wall from 20 yards.
Briggs was to nick a late consolation for the visitors though, prodding over Covolan having forced his way into the Worthing box.
