Worthing extend unbeaten run with 2-2 draw against Enfield Town
Strikers Ben Pope and Jimmy Wild were both on target as Worthing shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw with Enfield, stretching their unbeaten run to four games.
The hosts took the lead midway through the first half when Pope’s header was deflected in off the post, but Enfield equalised just before half-time through Aaron Greene.
Worthing retook the lead with 15 minutes to go when Wild rose highest to head in a corner, but the visitors snatched an 88th minute equaliser through Sam Youngs.
The result means the Mackerel Men miss the opportunity to move up to 19th in the table as results went in their favour with most of the teams around them dropping points.
Injured trio Jesse Starkey, Reece Myles-Meekums and Kieron Pamment were replaced by Pope, Jazz Rance and debutant Anesu Sisimayi who signed from Whitehawk this week.
The visitors had a couple of early chances as Greene shot over the bar from the edge of the box and Youngs poked wide of the near post from close range.
Alex Parsons then twice came close for Worthing as his low cross was deflected wide before Enfield goalkeeper Joe Wright pushed his shot around the post.
In the 14th minute Darren Budd curled up and over the wall but Wright got down low to save before Jazz Rance slid through to Sisimayi whose shot under pressure was saved.
Worthing took the lead in the 21st minute when Harvey Sparks’ pinpoint cross found Pope whose header was deflected off Dan Rumens and bounced in off the far post.
Moments before half-time an Enfield counter attack following a Worthing corner saw Youngs cross for Greene who evaded Sparks’ challenge to stroke into the bottom corner for 1-1.
Chances were few and far between in the second half, the hosts coming closest as Sparks blazed over and Wright palmed Sisimayi’s close range shot around the post.
Worthing retook the lead in the 75th minute when substitute Jimmy Wild rose highest in the box to head in Sam Rents’ corner for his third goal of the season.
Two minutes later Rance could have doubled their advantage but Enfield’s Mickey Parcell recovered well to intercept with the Worthing forward bearing down on goal.
Substitute David Herbert struck the side netting for the hosts in the 85th minute while Craig Calver shot over the bar for the visitors.
Enfield substitute Calver was involved again when the visitors equalised in the 88th minute, sliding through to Youngs who beat Lucas Covolan to the ball to prod across the line.
The Towners nearly snatched a winner in stoppage time when Covolan was caught off his line following a counter attack but Ryan Blackman shot wide from the centre circle.
