Worthing stretch unbeaten run to three games with late victory over Angels

Worthing snatched a late but deserved 2-1 win over Tonbridge Angels on Saturday to complete the double over their Kent neighbours.

After a goal-less first half in which the Mackerel Men should have comfortably been in front, the Angels took the lead in the 62nd minute through Joe Turner and it stayed that way until the 90th minute when Zack Newton finally broke the Tonbridge resistance to equalise before substitute Ben Pope sent the visiting supporters into raptures forcing the ball home in stoppage time to send the points back to West Sussex.

Worthing boss Adam Hinshelwood made three changes to the side that drew 3-3 at Staines Town in midweek, Matt Boiling replacing the suspended Joel Colbran, Jazz Rance and Zack Newton restored to the starting line up at the expense of Harvey Sparks and Ben Pope.

On a heavy pitch, Worthing found early success down the flanks with Rance and Reece Meekums getting past their full backs but unable to pick out a visiting player in the box. As it was, Angels keeper Jonathan Henly the first called into action pulling off saves from Newton three times as he broke into the penalty area having  in been played in behind the Angels back line. Meekums then almost gave Worthing the lead after a cross cum shot dropped just on top of Henly’s crossbar, frustrating the Mackerel Men who should have gone into the half time break with a comfortable lead.

Tonbridge came out in the second half with more purpose, leaving Worthing to have to play off the counter attack and it was no surprise when Joe Turner gave the Angels the lead in the 62nd minute after Worthing failed with two attempts to clear a free kick.

Goalkeeper Lucas Covolan then kept the Mackerel Men in the game with two smart one-on-one saves as Worthing struggled to get a foothold back in the match. As the half wore on, success was coming down the flanks again, with Rance and Meekums causing the home full backs more problems with their direct running and pace, Kieron Pamment firing the best chance over the bar after a fine pull back from Meekums.

Just as it looked as if Worthing would head home empty handed, Newton fired home the equaliser in the 90th minute to seemingly send the Mackerel Men home with a point. Not to be content with that, Worthing pushed forward again and after another cross landed in the Tonbridge box, the ball landed at the feet of substitute Pope who smashed it home to give Worthing the lead in stoppage time.

Tonbridge almost made sure the game ended all square, but unmarked striker Nathan Elder blazed over from a few yards as the Mackerel Men made it 7 points from three games and a move up to 15th place in the Bostik League Premier Division table.
