Hinshelwood: Team spirit carried us through

Manager Adam Hinshelwood praised the character of his side after they came from behind to seal a stoppage time victory at Tonbridge Angels in the Bostik League Premier Division.

After dominating the first half without scoring, the Mackerel Men fell behind to a 62nd minute Joe Turner strike and further chances fell the Angels’ way to put the game beyond doubt but for fine saves from Lucas Covolan.

Just as it looked like Worthing would come away empty handed, Zack Newton popped up in the 90th minute to force home an equaliser, followed by substitute Ben Pope slamming the ball home in the 92nd minute to complete a remarkable comeback and leave Hinshelwood happy he wasn’t left to rue missed chances.

‘I think it’s very fair to say we should have been out of sight by half time, there was only one team in it and their keeper made some fabulous saves to keep them in it. Second half, they came out with purpose and with a better shape, although we had some good chances before they scored, felt a bit like deja-vu if I’m honest.’

‘But, testament to our players, they kept going right to the end and beyond. That team spirit’ we have carried us through and got us the result in the end.’

‘If anything we were probably not ruthless enough in front of goal in that first half, bit of complacency with too much of the ball. We made sure we started sharp, with them not having played for a couple of weeks I felt we could exploit that playing at a high tempo and taking the game to them. We kept the ball better than we did last weekend, but felt the players thought they had to score at times, we just needed to be a little more patient and I think we would then have scored the chances we created before half time.’

‘Had we converted those chances then the game was possibly over and we could’ve shored it up defensively and protected Lucas a bit more. He’s made two great saves at 1-0 to keep us in it, one of those goes in and it’s a different game. I feel now it does take something special to beat him, earlier in the season anything was flying into the net, these saves are as important as the goals to win games.’

‘To come to somewhere like Longmead you have to work hard to win games, it’s not a given. This win stems from the chemistry and the team spirit I’ve already mentioned within this group of players, it’s a great squad to work with, to be a part of, and I can’t wait to get back to training with them again this week.’
