Worthing beat Needham Market to extend unbeaten home run to ten games
Joel Colbran scored his first Worthing goal as the Mackerel Men secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Needham Market in the penultimate home game of the season.
On his return from injury, defender Colbran struck into the bottom corner in the 14th minute, a goal that turned out to be the winner.
Moments after Needham Market had hit the post midway through the second half, Worthing were reduced to ten men when Joe Clarke was sent-off for a dangerous tackle.
Despite being a man down the hosts were able to hold on for the three points and at full-time the club annoucned manager Adam Hinshelwood has signed a new three year contract.
Hinshelwood took the opportunity to rotate his squad with only Sam Rents, George Barker and Reece Myles-Meekums retaining their places in the starting line-up.
Jesse Starkey and Alex Parsons were both ruled out due to work commitments while Matt Boiling, dual signed with Loxwood, returned to the side.
Worthing were much the better side in the early stages as captain Darren Budd, returning to the starting line-up, blasted over in the second minute.
Needham Market goalkeeper Daniel Gay did well to save Myles-Meekums’ six-yard attempt and Ben Pope’s first-time strike from the edge of the box.
George Barker then shot wide from long distance before Zack Newton’s surging run ended with him prodding at Gay.
The hosts were inevitably going to score, and took the lead in the 14th minute when Colbran played a one-two with Newton and slotted into the bottom corner.
Midway through the half it could have been 2-0, but for an excellent last ditch challenge from Keiran Morphew to deny Barker following a clever link up with Pope.
In a rare chance for the away side first half substitute George Exworth shot straight at Lucas Covolan from close range before Sam Rents curled just over from 20 yards.
Gay had to be on his toes again early in the second half to palm away Myles-Meekums’ shot before parrying Harvey Sparks’ fierce effort to safety.
Needham skipper Gareth Heath skewed his shot wide for the visitors seven minutes after the break before Newton shot just wide of the post from a throw in.
The visitors came close to equalising in the 66th minute when Jamie Griffith’s low strike from 25 yards hit the foot of the post, before Clarke received his marching orders.
Hinshelwood switched to a 4-4-1 formation following the red card and with Needham chasing an equaliser Covolan made a good save with his foot to deny Griffiths.
