Under 18’s round off the season with a win over South Park
Worthing Under 18’s came from behind to beat South Park 4-2 in their final Bostik Youth League South match of the season despite being able to field only 9 players.
With four players away on Sussex FA Under 18 duty and others unavailable, the young Mackerel Men produced a tremendous backs to the wall performance finishing the campaign on a high. A mid-day kick off in temperatures touching 24 degrees on a pitch which suffered from water-logging causing numerous postponements earlier in the season, was now rock hard and made hard work for Worthing’s passing style approach.
After a first half hour of few chances with South Park enjoying the balance of possession, Worthing were the more creative in front of goal, so it was a little hard on Worthing when South Park took a 39th minute lead, and when they doubled their advantage on 41 mins it seemed important to get in at half time without conceding further. But, on the contrary, Worthing pushed forward and pulled a goal back on 43 mins and within 90 seconds an equaliser was scored, both fired home by Hayden Skerry.
As the second half continued, the nine men began to feel the effects of the heat, especially with all the effort put in during the first 45 minutes. However, the defence remained strong and seemed unlikely to concede, and on the break the forwards looked dangerous and were causing the defence trouble despite the lack of numbers. As the game entered the last 15 minutes Worthing looked the team most likely to score, and in the 88th minute when Skerry muscled his way onto a long throw and slotted home with a fine finish to complete his hat-trick. Not to be content with three, Skerry then scored his fourth, direct from a free kick in stoppage time leaving the hosts barely time to kick off before the referee blew for the end to an impressive campaign.
