Hinshelwood begins to shape squad as first players to re-commit are announced

Eight of last year’s first team squad have committed to the club once again for the 2018/19 season as manager Adam Hinshelwood starts to build a squad capable of a play-off push.

Expectations of a more successful season next term have been raised by an extremely productive second half of the campaign that saw any fears of relegation vanish as well as wins over many teams in the top half, including eventual champions Billericay Town.

Hinshelwood has been quick to state his desire to keep the majority of the current squad together and as acted quickly by already securing the services of eight for another season.

Unsurprisingly one of the first Hinshelwood was keen to commit was his Player of the Season, Joel Colbran. The all-action defender will return next season having played a major part in shoring up the defence shortly after Hinshelwood’s return to the club.

Captain Darren Budd also returns having been an influential figure since signing from Horsham in October.

Another player who’ll be returning that brings plenty of experience is wide man Alex Parsons. Parsons who helped rivals Bognor Regis Town to promotion during 2016/17 originally signed on dual-registration terms from the Rocks in September, scoring on his first appearance against a 2-1 defeat against Kingstonian.

A big coup for Hinshelwood has been getting midfielder Jesse Starkey to agree to commit for another season. Starkey began last season with League One Gillingham but joined Worthing for a loan spell before the expiration of his contract with the Gills in January saw him commit for the remainder of the season.

Joe Clarke, Jared Rance, Rhyle Ovenden and Ruben Schneider have also all agreed to return to Woodside next season.

Hinshelwood believes getting a settled squad early is key to success next season: “I’m really pleased to get these players to commit, they all played a big part in what we achieved in the second half of last season”. “I’ve made no secret of the fact I want to get our business done early so we can focus on hitting the ground running, I’ll been talking to the other lads in the coming days too to finalise who’s staying and who’s going”.
