Volunteering Opportunities

Worthing Football Club rely on a group of fantastic volunteers to help out on match days and behind the scenes.

If you think that you might be able to spare some time to help out, please let us know: we have lots of different roles and we aim to match people to areas that will be of interest with the time they have available so that we can support our Club.

Match Day Stewards

Here’s an example of what Stewards need to do on normal match day:

Before KO and before the stadium is open (1pm)

We walk round and do a safety check of the inside of the ground. This involves removing any objects that could be harmful or used in a harmful way e.g. broken glass and bottles, nails, bricks, etc (there isn’t much of this kind of material laying around during the season, but we always need to check).

We monitor the outside of the ground and encourage considerate parking and good crowd behaviour. This includes allowing room for the away team coach to park safely outside the ground. We cone off parking spaces on the hard standing for officials and disabled supporters and show them to their space when they arrive.

We stand on the main gate with a guest list and let officials, players and people on the guest list in and mark them off.

We also stand on the gate by the turnstiles and help people to access the ground if they can’t go through the turnstiles, e.g. wheelchairs, pushchairs, etc.

During the Game

We stand with the home or away fans during the game and encourage good behaviour and a family friendly environment. We are particularly concerned about any homophobic, racist, sexist chanting or anything else that could cause offence and is outside of the normal chants we’d normally get at a game. If there are any problems, we don’t have to deal with it by ourselves because we have walkie talkies and can contact the other people in the team for help, if needed. We would look to approach the fan or fans and diffuse the situation if we felt confident to do so. If , however, it cannot be diffused, we have a system for calling the police to deal with matters beyond our expertise.

We ensure that the walkways leading up to the seated stand are clear of objects and remind people to keep them clear.

We know who the first aiders are, how to contact them and where the first aid box and defibrillator is.

We aim to answer fans questions where possible, ‘where are the toilets/bar/club shop’, etc and provide a professional ‘customer service.’

We escort the referee and linesman from the pitch after the game.

After the Game (until about 5.30pm)

At the end of the game, some of us do a litter pick, both in the ground and in the street outside (which helps us to keep our neighbours happy.)

So it’s all about providing a safe and secure environment for the fans on match days. As a steward, we don’t have to do all of these every time: we have a Head Steward who coordinates who’s doing what on the day. Basically, the more volunteers we have, the easier it is for everyone.

If you feel that you would like to get involved as a Steward, or with other volunteering opportunities, please contact Dave Dowell at dave@worthingfc.com

Working Party Opportunities

During the year we arrange a number of days for the Working Party to meet at Woodside.

We tackle general cleaning, painting, gardening, net repairs, etc. No expertise is necessary.

Kit and materials will be provided although it would be helpful if you could bring along gloves and overalls. If you have a favourite paint brush, that would be good too!

Teas, coffees and snacks are provided to keep our energy and enthusiasm  at peak performance.

If you’d like to find out more about joining the Working Party, please contact Mike Tanner, premises@worthingfc.com
