Akanbi joins after a short spell at fellow Vanarama National League South side Dulwich Hamlet where he featured on three occasions this season, netting on his only start for the south London outfit against Hemel Hemstead in mid-September.
The 25-year-old has previous National League experience with Aldershot and most recently with Dagenham & Redbridge where he made ten appearances in all competitions for the Daggers, scoring twice.
Akanbi seeks a new challenge as he links up with Hinshelwood and is excited for the season ahead: “I’m buzzing to get started. I’m just happy to be somewhere where I feel like I’m going to be appreciated and I’ve felt a warm welcome since being with the club for the last week,” Akanbi said.
“One of the draws that brought me to Worthing was the style of football and I feel like I could bring something a bit different and complement the team”.
When asked what Worthing fans can expect from him he said: “I’m a sharp, nippy striker, in and around the box. I do get a goal or two, so the fans should be expecting a few goals from me and some contributions to the team”.
“I had an honest chat with the gaffer about where we’re both trying to go and where we both see Worthing, myself, and our plans for the near future. To be honest, there wasn’t much convincing, he was just being honest with me, and I think that was the biggest draw”.
With Jake Robinson a long term absentee, Hinshelwood is pleased to have added a forward with experience of the level to his squad: “He’ll add a bit of nouse and knowhow of this level”.
“A real strong, thickset lad, he likes to back in to defenders and he’s got an eye for goal too”.
“I think he’ll bring the best out of the other forward players we have too”.
Akanbi registration was confirmed by the FA so he’s in line to make his debut when the Reds travel to Braintree Town in National League South tomorrow.
