Chris Agutter sees the bank holiday double header of away trips as “another opportunity to get points on the board” with the team continuing their run of six away matches to start the campaign.
Their last encounter was an entertaining one at Clarence Park as they played out a 2-2 draw with St Albans City. Worthing fell behind early, but got themselves back on level terms less than a quarter of an hour in as Tommy Willard opened his account for the season, finishing off a brilliant team move. Jack Spong scored his third free-kick in two matches midway through the second period, but Ken Charles headed in the equaliser not long after that meant the points were shared.
There was almost a full programme of midweek fixtures this week apart from Worthing and Welling who face off against each other next month. That now means that Worthing are 10th in the table having played a game less than all of the teams above them at this early stage, for what it’s worth.
Team News
Chris Agutter confirmed that there are one or two doubts in the squad ahead of the bank holiday double header. He admitted that Danny Cashman and Sam Beard both stopped training early on Thursday night, but sees it as an opportunity for other players to step up and deliver.
Earlier today, it was announced that midfielder Jack Bates and defender Sam Packham have both signed and could make their debuts tomorrow afternoon at Vauxhall Road.
View from the Camp – Chris Agutter
“It’s two more tough away games for us this weekend but we’ll just look to put more points on the board, which is the attitude.
“Both games will be difficult and will present certain challenges but again, the same as the first two games, we know that there’s six points up for grabs and that’s the aim.
“Hemel are very direct and get the ball forward quickly. They’re full of energy and have willing runners – they’re a decent side”.
The Opposition
Unlike Worthing, Hemel Hempstead were in action in midweek and they continued their unbeaten start in doing so at Aveley. Ricardo German found the net for the Tudors on Monday night as they claimed all three points in Essex to bump themselves up to 2nd in the league table.
Under the stewardship of Bobby Wilkinson, Hemel drew their season opener at home to Salisbury and picked up three points on the road at Weymouth before following up with a win at Aveley to claim seven points out of a possible nine so far.
Previous Meetings
The last three encounters between the sides have seen all three results play out. The most recent meeting was back in December last year when the Tudors were comfortable 2-0 winners at The Focus Community Arena.
The reverse fixture last season was played in September and it was a competitive battle that ended 1-1 at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium. Joel Colbran scored a late equaliser to salvage a point against the ten-man Tudors.
The Rebels were the winners on the final day of the 2022/23 (regular) season as goals from Mo Dabre, Ollie Pearce and Kane Wills helped them brush aside the Tudors. It was a victory that set them up nicely for their play off campaign where they eventually lost out to Oxford City in the semi-final.
