The Rebels will look to pick up where they left off as they head to St Albans off the back of a remarkable comeback win on the opening day at Weston-super-Mare.
Chris Agutter’s side found themselves three goals down at the break but a remarkable second-half turnaround saw them take home all three points on the opening day thanks to two free-kick goals from Jack Spong and a brace by Danny Cashman who scored the winner from the spot deep into injury time.
At half time last weekend, the Rebels were bottom of the league table, but they come into the second matchday in second place!
Team News
Chris Agutter admitted that he does have one or two injury doubts as his side prepares to face the Saints.
“We’re not as loaded as perhaps we would have liked,” said Agutter, “especially with a test the size of St Albans. But equally, it’s an opportunity for others in the squad to step up and contribute just like they did last week at Weston-super-Mare.
View from the Camp – Chris Agutter
“We’re looking forward to it. It’s similar to the Weston game, we’re really appreciative of the fact that they are a good side.
“We watched them against Maidstone and thought they were very unlucky not to beat Maidstone, especially not to get at least a point out of it, they were very good.
“So we realise it’s going to be a very tough game, I think they will be one of the best teams in the division. They play some very good football so we appreciate it’s going to be a tough test but we look forward to it”.
The Opposition
The Saints were narrowly defeated on the opening day by Maidstone United in a closely contested battle. Timi Eweka headed in from a corner late on at Clarence Park for the Stones to take home all three points.
Despite their opening day defeat, there is plenty of positivity around Clarence Park as enter the 2024/25 campaign.
David Noble rejoined the club in the summer as Head Coach after a brief spell away with Wealdstone in the National League. After a positive pre-season which included winning the Hertfordshire Charity Cup, the Saints look set to challenge at the top end of the division this term.
Previous Meetings
Goals, goals, goals! In the last three meetings between the two sides, 23 goals have been scored!
The last encounter was just a few months ago at Clarence Park when Worthing came out on top after a crazy first half that saw five goals scored, including two in the first two minutes! A brace from Jack Spong and goals from Brad Dolaghan and Ollie Pearce saw Worthing to a 4-2 win.
In the reverse fixture last season, it ended 4-4 in a thrilling encounter at Woodside Road. Again, five goals were scored in the first half on this occasion! Goals from Kane Wills, Ricky Aguiar and two from Ollie Pearce earned Worthing a point on that day.
Woodside played host to another classic in February 2023. St Albans edged a nine-goal thriller that day to take all three points.
