The Rebels were looking to pick up where they left off as they made the trip to St Albans off the back of their remarkable opening day comeback win against Weston-super-Mare.

Chris Agutter, still forced to watch proceedings from the stands due to suspension, picked an unchanged eleven with just one change on the bench as Finlay Chadwick was named instead of Harrison Smith who missed out with a groin injury.

Worthing again found themselves behind in the early stages, outdone by a Saints corner that was floated to the back post where Jack James could head in with ease.

Ken Charles nearly had the chance to double the advantage just a few moments later after he was sent through over the top by Girogio Rasulo. Alfie Young did brilliantly to cover for the Rebels and closed the angle well to force Charles to shoot wide.

The Rebels produced a wonderful move to get back on level terms less than 15 minutes in. After playing out from the back, the move ended with Danny Cashman laying it on a plate to Tommy Willard who poked in at the far post.

It was an intriguing contest from there on with both sides looking to play similar styles of football. Worthing had the lion’s share of possession and seemed to be really enjoying their football on a sunny afternoon in AL1. But, they knew that the Saints carried just as much of a threat and they threatened on 25 minutes, but Chris Haigh made a comfortable save at his near post to deny Charles.

Worthing went close a few moments later as Jack Spong floated in a free-kick from a crossing position into Joe Cook whose header went narrowly wide of the upright.

Willard had a stab at a brace just before half time after another well-worked Worthing move. Michael Johnson made a superb one-handed save to keep the scores level going into the break.

The home side were in the ascendancy at the start of the second half and very nearly found the breakthrough just a minute into it. It was James who went close to doubling his tally, but his curled shot went over.

Ten minutes later, Charles had a golden chance to give his side the lead but got his shot all wrong after being played through and hit it over the bar.

On the hour mark, momentum swung in Worthing’s favour as they began to look a threat going forward. Willard had a great chance following a corner but it was hit into a packed area and cleared away off the line. Two minutes later, Willard threatened again but saw his shot blocked.

When the Rebels won a free-kick some 20 yards out on 65 minutes, there was only one man who was going to take it. Up step Spong who fired in a low strike past the helpless Michael Johnson in the Saints net.

Worthing made their first change on 69 minutes as Jake Hutchinson was replaced by Ollie Starkey.

But, it was the Saints who struck next. James whipped in a delightful cross to the head of Charles who flicked it nicely into the bottom corner at the far post.

The Saints nearly took the lead five minutes later from another dangerous free-kick that was somehow kept out inside a crowded area.

On 79 minutes, Worthing made their second change when Nicky Wheeler replaced Sam Beard.

St Albans were in the ascendancy going into the final ten minutes. There were huge appeals for a penalty for the home side as Cook tangled with Shaun Jeffers in the area, but the referee saw nothing doing.

Despite late pressure from the home side, the Rebels held on for a point at Clarence Park after an entertaining encounter.

Next up for Agutter’s side is a trip to Hemel Hempstead next Saturday.
