Worthing first played St Albans City on 13th March 1937, when a goal from S. Best secured us a 1-0 victory in an AFA Senior Cup semi-final, which was played at (the original) Plough Lane ground in Wimbledon.

We had to wait for promotion to Isthmian League Division 1 in 1982 before meeting tomorrow’s opponents again. Winning the home match 6-3 (our highest margin of victory in these matches) and drawing 3-3 away, we ended the season as champions and St Albans finished bottom.

St Albans reached the Isthmian Premier Division for 1986-87, and we won the home match 4-2 before losing 2-1 away. The home match was played at Nyewood Lane in Bognor Regis, because building of the south stand had not been completed.

We suffered relegation that season and did not return to the Premier Division again until 1995. In 1995-96, our visitors won 5-1 at Woodside Road and 2-0 in Hertfordshire, although we did win 3-2 at Clarence Park in an Isthmian League Cup tie (our only meeting in that competition).

We were relegated at the end of that season, so the next three meetings all took place in the FA Cup. In 2016-17, St Albans recorded their largest winning margin against us, scoring six without reply at their ground, and three seasons later we lost a home replay 3-1 after a 2-2 draw.

Two seasons ago we faced each other in National League South for the first time, and we won 1-0 away before losing 5-4 at home. Last season the home match had slightly fewer goals, finishing as a 4-4 draw, and we won the return match 4-2.

Our latest meeting was on 17th August this season, when goals from Jack Spong and Tommy Willard saw us share the points in a 2-2 draw.
