The Rebels secured all three points away at Chippenham on Tuesday night with a dramatic 96th-minute winner at the Thornbury Surfacing Stadium. Worthing fell behind in the first half but levelled the score just before the breakthrough Mo Faal.
Faal bagged his second goal of the game on 83 minutes to hand his side the lead, but the Rebels were pegged back four minutes later and headed into injury time with the score level. Second half substitute Ruben Carvalho whipped in a glorious corner in the 96th minute, which was bunded in at the near post as the Rebels claimed all three points on a memorable night in Wiltshire.
It’s a result which extended Worthing’s unbeaten run to eight matches in the National League South, picking up 20 points out of a possible 24 in that time. They now sit 5th in the league table and are just three points off top spot.
Team News
Chris Agutter confirmed that Sam Beard came off with an ankle injury on Tuesday night and is a doubt heading into tomorrow’s match. He also picked up his tenth booking of the season on Tuesday, which means he will be suspended for the league matches against Boreham Wood and Tonbridge Angels.
Agutter hopes to have Tommy Willard back in selection contention this Saturday, with the forward getting set to return from a thigh injury.
View from the Camp – Chris Agutter
“The mood in the camp is positive. We’re looking forward to a really exciting week, starting with Maidstone. We’ve been on a decent run and we’re right in amongst it in terms of the league table, so it’s been a productive period for us.
“We were better than I thought on Tuesday night. Other than the first 10/15 minutes where they were on top, I thought we got a good foothold in the game and I thought we were in control. Our response to going behind was very positive and then in the second half, it was more of the same.
“You know what you’re going to get from Maidstone. They do the basics incredibly well. They get the ball forward quickly, on the front foot and are really aggressive. They make you defend for long periods of the game, so we’re expecting a tough game.”
The Opposition
The Stones have been on a fantastic run themselves, having won eight out of their last nine matches. In that run, they have also kept seven clean sheets.
They were beaten on their travels last weekend at Chesham but soon put that right, with a midweek victory away at Weymouth.
It’s a run of form that has seen the Stones climb to 3rd in the league table, currently two points above Worthing having played an extra game.
