Friendly Wed 30 July The Pilot Field
Hastings Utd
Worthing
19:45

Wednesday night’s trip to the Pilot Field is our sixth friendly of the summer and our final away outing before the National League South recommences on the 9th August.

On the weekend, the Reds produced a comeback to hold Lewes to a 2-2 draw at the Dripping Pan. A delicate flick from Glen Rea was followed up less than a minute later by a audacious dink from Jack Spong to level matters in the second half. Both sides had chances to claim the victory, but the winning goal proved elusive in East Sussex.

It was our first stalemate of pre-season and served as another opportunity for players to get some important minutes in the tank.

The Opposition

Hastings are gearing up for their first campaign in the eighth tier for three years, following their relegation from the Isthmian League Premier Division South last season.

The U’s finished in 20th position – 10 points adrift of safety – as they experienced a significant decline from the previous two campaigns. A lack of firepower in offensive areas contributed to their demotion, as they netted just 37 times in 42 matches.

Tomorrow night’s opponents earned promotion from Step 4 in 2022 as they convincingly won the Isthmian League South East Division title. Such was their dominance, that runners-up Ashford United finished a staggering 13 points off their contenders.

The East Sussex based outfit carried that momentum into their next couple of seasons, as they continued to challenge in the top half of the table. Under Chris Agutter, Hastings agonisingly missed out on the play-offs by just two places in the 2023/24 campaign, whilst also reaching the final of the Sussex Senior Cup.

Previous Meeting

Hastings 1-1 (4-5 Pens) Worthing, Sussex Senior Cup, 26th April 2023

Penalty heroics from Harrison Male helped the Rebels reach the final of the County Cup in the last encounter back in 2023.

The semi-final went the distance as the two sides couldn’t be separated over 90 minutes of action.

On the stroke of half-time the hosts broke the deadlock, as Sam Adams fired home from the spot. However, the response was swift from Adam Hinshelwood’s side, as Javaun Splatt converted a penalty of our own just before the interval.

An uneventful second period yielded little goalmouth action, which resulted in the tie being decided by a penalty shoot-out. Promising goalkeeper Male denied Ben Pope, Kasim Aidoo and Jake Elliott from 12 yards to a book a second successive appearance in the final for the Rebels.
