The team hailing from Woodside Road earned their first three point haul of the campaign on the weekend, as they produced a comeback to prevail in a West Sussex derby away to Horsham.

After the hosts had raced into a two-goal advantage courtesy of a Joe Cook own goal and a smart finish from former Worthing striker Greg Luer, the Reds responded emphatically to restore parity before the break.

Persistent work from the industrious Temi Babalola resulted in the striker poking a clever finish past goalkeeper Lewis Carey before captain on the day Sam Beard bravely headed in the equaliser.

It was one-way traffic after the interval and Jack Spong completed the turnaround with a coolly dispatched penalty.

Sam Packham capped a magnificent display with sumptuous curling shot into the top corner before Horsham pulled one back in stoppage-time.

Chris Agutter’s side held firm to maintain their unbeaten record following their opening day stalemate at home to Bath City.

The season is now in full swing, with the Rebels in the midst of a heavily congested schedule, enduring a period of four matches in just nine days.

Wednesday night’s trip to Farnborough is our first midweek contest of the campaign and is the final match of Gameweek Three of the National League South, with the remainder of the league playing their respective games on Tuesday night.

TEAM NEWS

Club captain Joel Colbran remains unavailable for selection due to suspension as he serves the second game of his three match ban. Aside from the 26-year-old, Chris Agutter is operating with a full squad.

THE OPPOSITION

Farnborough are searching for their first league victory of the campaign following two frustrating results.

The Boro were held to a 1-1 home draw with Eastbourne Borough on the opening day before falling to a 3-2 defeat on their travels to Chesham United on Saturday.

Spencer Day and his players are looking to build on an encouraging period since earning promotion from the Southern League Premier Division back in 2022, where they have finished on the peripheries of the play-offs for the last three terms. Last season they finished in 10th position, while in the 2023/24 campaign, they missed out on the top seven by a single point.

Tomorrow’s opponents  will undoubtedly provide a stern test at the Saunders Transport Community, having beaten Worthing both home and away ast season.

THE GAFFER

Manager Spencer Day has become synonymous with Farnborough FC, having been in charge of the Yellows since 2011.

During a turbulent 14-year spell in charge of the Hampshire-based club, Day has consolidated Farnborough’s status as a National League South outfit.

The 53-year-old’s time at the Saunders Transport Community Stadium has consisted of several promotions and demotions, although the positives far outshine the negatives.

Prior to his time at Farnborough, the Englishman held the manager post at Chertsey FC. He first came to recognition as a teenager in 1989 when he saved Aldershot from closure with a £200,000 signed affidavit.  However, he only  remained on the club’s board as a director for three months.

ONE TO WATCH

Rakish Bingham has been one of the standout performers amongst the National League South forwards so far, having netted in their opening two games. The striker has instantly repaid the faith instilled into him by his new employers having only moved to the Saunders Transport Community Stadium this summer.

The 31-year-old has appeared for the likes of Wigan Athletic, Hartlepool, Doncaster Rovers and Scottish sides Hamilton Academical and Dundee United, but is probably best known for his time at Ebbsfleet United.

During a five-year spell at Stonebridge Road, Bingham netted 48 goals in 137 appearances, including 16 league goals in his last National League South campaign in the 2022/23 season. Bingham’s offensive contribution was instrumental in Ebbsfleet’s historic promotion campaign, as they clinched the NLS title with 103 points – 20 more than runners-up Dartford.

Farnborough’s new number nine is a threat across the front three, as he is also able to operate efficiently off the right or left flank.

His goal in the 3-2 defeat against Chesham United on Saturday was particularly impressive, as his rasping half-volley flew through a sea of bodies and into the opposition net.

LAST MEETING

Worthing 1-2 Farnborough, National League South, Tuesday 25th February

Farnborough frustrated Chris Agutter’s side in the last meeting, as they claimed all three points at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium back in February.

The visitors notched themselves in front in the 10th minute, as Ollie Robinson bundled in a scrappy goal at the back post.

It took just three minutes for the Rebels to level proceedings through Muhammadu Faal, who calmly stroked home an equaliser following good work from Rubin Carvalho.

However, parity was short-lived once again with Farnborough’s Jonny Stuttle blasting an unstoppable strike past Lucas Covolan after the hosts failed to clear the lines.

That 16th minute goal proved to be the winner as Worthing couldn’t breach the opposition’s net for the second occasion despite their best efforts.
