Mason Bloomfield scored the only goal for the hosts in the second half, in a game overshadowed by a serious injury suffered by Farnborough midfielder Aaron Kuhl with only minutes of added time remaining.
With captain Joel Colbran still unavailable through suspension, Chris Agutter made one change from the side that started against Horsham at the weekend, with Razzaq Coleman De-Graft making his first league start for the club in place of Toby Byron who dropped to the bench.
Farnborough right wing-back Luciano D’Auria-Henry came up with the first effort of the match, calling Seb Stacey into action with a strong effort from 25 yards after Jack Spong lost possession just outside the area.
Minutes later, after enjoying their first spell in the opposition third, Worthing struck the woodwork with their first effort of the match aa Harry Ransom headed Spong’s in-swinging corner against the back post.
Rakish Bingham had a golden opportunity to open the scoring for the hosts with just over 20 minutes played. A loose pass from Spong in midfield allowed Boro to break against an exposed Worthing backline, and with the ball finding Rakish Bingham with space to shoot inside the box, Stacey was on hand to produce a fine acrobatic stop from close range.
Worthing did have the ball in the back of the net on the stroke of half time with Temi Babalola rounding the ‘keeper after being sent through on goal by Spong, however the linesman’s flag denied the visitors from going ahead just before the interval.
Ten minutes after the restart, neat link-up play between half time substitute Anointed Chukwu and Glen Rea eventually led to Coleman De-Graft being found in space on the right hand side, with the wing-back cutting onto his left before firing a strong deflected effort which landed just wide of Jack Turner’s right hand post.
An untimely giveaway from Joe Cook presented Farnborough substitute Frank Keita the chance to get a shot off from just outside the area, however the Boro frontman dragged his effort well wide of Stacey’s goal just shy of the 70 minute mark.
With Worthing having failed to get out of their own half for large portions of the second half, they would go on to find themselves a goal down in the 77 th minute as Bloomfield slotted home from close range.
Battling play from Aaron Kuhl to win the ball back in midfield afforded space for Teddy Collis to venture into the box, squaring the ball to Bloomfield who finished low past Stacey from the edge of the six-yard box.
The Rebels’ best chance to find an equaliser fell to Chukwu with two minutes of normal time remaining, with the substitute blasting a first time effort just over the bar after Farnborough struggled to clear their lines following a corner.
The game’s closing stages were clouded by an injury suffered by Boro midfielder Kuhl, who went down requiring lengthy treatment following a collision with Cook just inside the Farnborough half.
A fair challenge between the players, which unfortunately resulted in Kuhl picking up a serious injury.
After a 45-minute delay, referee Daniel Baines got the game back underway to see out the remainder of extra time, and while Worthing got players forward in an attempt to salvage a leveller, Farnborough held on to secure their first three points of the new campaign.
Worthing will be back in National League South action at the weekend as we host Enfield Town at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium (Saturday 23 August, 3.00pm KO).
