Forest Green Rovers are the 137th club that we have been drawn to play in the FA Cup, and the third from Gloucestershire.
We were drawn away to Cheltenham Town in the 4th qualifying round in 1992, losing 3-2, and two seasons later triumphed over Gloucester City in the same round, winning the replay 2-1 at Woodside Road after a 1-1 draw.
Because of the geographical nature of the draw in the early rounds, Sussex has supplied the most opponents, Worthing having been drawn against 40 different clubs from our own county.
One of those 40, however, did not face us on the pitch. In the 1914-15 season, at the start of World War 1, we were slow to register our intention to cease playing football for the duration of hostilities, and subsequently found ourselves receiving a walkover against Tunbridge Wells in the 1st qualifying round.
We were due to face Eastbourne St Mary’s in the next round, the only time that we were drawn against them, but withdrew from the competition before the date for the round.
Surrey and Kent are next on the list, having supplied 26 and 23 different opponents, respectively.
Within the past two seasons we have played Alfreton Town (Derbyshire) and Morecambe (Lancashire), thereby adding two more counties to the list, and, following our matches against Jersey Bulls this season, we have now played clubs from both main Channel Islands, Guernsey having been defeated in the preliminary round in 2014.
Southwick are the club that we have played most often in the FA Cup, being our opponents on 17 occasions. Tunbridge Wells Rangers are highest in the list for clubs from outside Sussex, and we have played them seven times; in one of those matches we lost 12-1, which is our largest margin of defeat in the FA Cup.
We reached the 4th qualifying round for the first time in 1927-28, and in the preliminary round we defeated Rock-a-Nore 9-0 at the Sports Ground, which is our largest winning margin in the FA Cup.
These opponents should not be confused with another club of the same name, whom we knocked out of the competition in 1908; that club became Hastings & St Leonards in the early 1920s and is now known as Hastings United.
Unfortunately, the situation is made more complicated by the fact that we have also played another club called Hastings United, another club called Hastings & St Leonards, and a Hastings & St Leonards United!
Our first opponents in the FA Cup were Eastbourne (now Eastbourne Town), who won 1-0 at Beach House Park in a preliminary round tie on 23rd September 1899.
They are one of five clubs from that town to have been drawn against us, the others being Borough, Old Town, St Mary’s (see above) and United.
We have played five clubs from the Football League, the first of which was Brighton & Hove Albion, on 15th October 1932.
The Albion had neglected to apply for their exemption to the first round, and hose to play through the qualifying rounds.
We met them in the 2nd qualifying round and, after controversially agreeing to move the match to the Goldstone Ground, lost 7-1.
Brighton, who had defeated Shoreham 12-0 in the previous round, then went on to win six more ties, before eventually losing to West Ham United in a 5th round replay.
We have lost all of our meetings with Football League clubs: as well as the Brighton match, Oxford United beat us 4-0 in 1982, AFC Bournemouth won 3-1 in 1994, Rotherham United won 3-0 in 1999 and Morecambe won 2-0 last season.
The Oxford match was a 2 d round tie, the only time we have progressed that far in the competition; Brighton reached the final that season, meaning that this is the only time that there has been a Sussex club in every round.
