The 35-year-old joins newly appointed Adam Hinshelwood’s management team, re-uniting
the pair who worked together during Hinshelwood’s first spell at the club.
On the appointment, Hinshelwood said “Jon is one of the best young coaches in the area, his knowledge and experience will be invaluable for me and the club”.
For the last 15 months Meeney has worked as first team coach at Sutton United, where he recently oversaw four matches as interim manager following the departure of Steve Morrison but left the Ambers by mutual consent after the appointment of Chris Agutter last week.
On his return to the club, Meeney commented: “I’m excited to be back at the club where I have so many fond memories from my early coaching years – I’m excited to link back up with Hinsh to kick on again”.
Meeney’s association with his home town club goes back a long way, starting out as a player in the youth team.
Meeney pivoted away from playing to focus on a coaching career at a young age and was given his first opportunity in coaching by East Preston before being offered a role by Hinshelwood after his initial appointment in December 2013.
Hinshelwood resigned in June 2015 and Meeney was given the reins as joint manager alongside Gary Elphick who had just signed for the club as a player.
The pair led the club to promotion from the Isthmian League South East Division at the first attempt, beating Faversham Town in the play-off final at Woodside Road.
Meeney stepped away to leave Elphick in sole charge in April 2017 following a season of stabilisation in Isthmian League Premier Division.
In his time away from the club he held coaching roles at Brighton & Hove Albion (Academy), Eastbourne Borough, Crawley Town, Horsham, Hastings United, as well as Sutton United.
Everyone at Worthing FC would like to welcome him back to the club and wish him the best of luck in his role.
