We first encountered Hemel Hempstead Town in 1965/66, when we were both members of the Athenian League Premier Division.

The home fixture, on 11th December, finished 3-2 in our favour, with Mick Streeter, Gerry Offen and David Bloom scoring our goals.

After meeting again the following season, there was then a gap of two seasons before we resumed our rivalry, this time in Athenian Division 2.

The first match at that level resulted in a 3-0 win for Worthing, which is the largest margin of victory in these encounters.

We were promoted at the end of the 1971/72 campaign, so did not play Hemel again until we were both founder- members of Isthmian League Division 2 in 1977.

During this hiatus, our opponents had dropped “Town” from their name and had moved homes, from Crabtree Lane to their current Vauxhall Road ground.

Our promotion once again ended the run of fixtures between our two clubs, this time after five seasons. We returned to Division 2 in 1991, and started the campaign with a 2-2 draw at Hemel; the significance of that score-line is that it meant that we had already attained the same number of points that we had totalled away from home the previous season.

After two seasons at that level, we were again promoted, but did play Hemel at Woodside Road the following year in an Isthmian League Cup tie.

We then had to wait 23 years before playing Hemel again (by which time they had reacquired the “Town” suffix) and drew 1-1 with them at home in an FA Trophy tie, before we won the replay by the only goal of the match.

We have played Hemel Hempstead Town in every season of our National League South career, with the latest match finishing 3-0 to us at Woodside Road on 15th March of this year; Danny Cashman, Temi
