Jack Spong netted a brace before a resilient defensive display from the Rebels ensured the three points stayed intact.
The opening exchanges were played at a pedestrian pace as both sides struggled to retain possession. Bailey Smith was forced off in the ninth minute with a suspected hamstring injury and was replaced by Nathan Odokonyero.
Alex Babos registered the first attempt of the match from distance as he connected sweetly with a volley. Fortunately for the visitors, it sailed comfortably over the crossbar.
Minutes after firing a tame effort wide from 25 yards out, Spong broke the deadlock from almost the exact same spot on the pitch.
Midway through the first period, the former Brighton & Hove Albion youngster occupied a pocket of space and was picked out by Sam Packham. Our number 10 set his sights on Ben Goode’s goal and arrowed a finish into the bottom corner to score his third of the campaign.
It was almost a quick-fire double for Adam Hinshelwood’s side as they immediately pushed for a second. Joel Colbran fizzed a cross into Odokonyero, whose first-time strike was gathered astutely by Goode.
The momentum was firmly in Worthing’s favour and a goalmouth scramble almost yielded another goal. Packham’s delivery caused issues for the Chesham defence and several Claret and Blue bodies threw themselves to thwart Harry Ransom, Colbran and Brad Dolaghan from close-range.
Chesham contained their rigid structure for the remainder of the half to go into the interval only one behind.
Worthing resumed control of proceedings after the restart and were awarded a penalty just five minutes into the second half.
A counter-attack culminated with possession being worked out wide to Odokonyero, who cut inside and unleashed an effort goalward.
The attempt ricochetted off Alfie Young and bounced onto the crossbar, causing pandemonium in the box. Expert positioning from Dolaghan saw the ball drop at his feet and just as he went to tap into the empty net, Connor Stevens brought him down virtually on the goal-line.
Referee Dan Blades pointed straight to the spot, but decided to take a lenient approach to the Chesham skipper, who had already received a booking earlier on in the contest.
Spong stepped up, but his kick from 12 yards was poor and allowed Goode to stop the spot-kick. However, the ball fell straight back to the midfielder and he made no mistake at the second bite of the cherry to double his and and his team’s tally for the evening.
In the 64th minute, Chesham halved the deficit through substitute Jayden Bennetts. Josh Jeffries’ distribution on this occasion was inaccurate and allowed full-back Josh Addei to pounce on it down the right. A cross was fired towards Bennetts and a sweeping first-time finish punished Jeffries for his mistake.
However, the Southampton loanee would atone for his error in second-half stoppage-time, as he produced a sharp reaction to tip Karl Oliyide’s header over the crossbar.
Chances also fell to Dan Bayliss and Zak Joseph, but both players couldn’t hit the target and equalise.
Eight minutes of stoppage-time was defended with plenty of resilience, as Worthing were desperate to preserve their lead. The full-time whistle reverberated around The Meadow and was a sweet sound for the Rebels. It signalled successive away victories for the first time in the National League South this season and a perfect start to league football back under Adam Hinshelwood.
Six points from a possible six heading into a period which includes four successive home matches at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium. Dover Athletic are next on the agenda.
