It’s fourth against third in Devon tonight, with both sides level on points before a ball has been kicked this evening.
Another crucial victory would complete the feat of ten consecutive wins in all competition for the Rebels, who have ascended up the table as a result of their rampant form.
The weekend’s display featured an immense sense of resilience, as Adam Hinshelwood’s side overcame Slough Town away from home after conceding a very early goal. Wiktor Makowski gave the hosts the lead in the fifth minute, but a second half brace from National League South top scorer Brad Dolaghan claimed the full complement of points for the Rebels of West Sussex.
Meanwhile, Torquay United couldn’t have prepared any better for their midweek match, as they put seven past Eastbourne Borough without reply on the weekend – the biggest win in the league this season. Louis Dennis netted a hat-trick, while both Jordan Young and Dylan Morgan recorded a brace against the Sports.
The Reds have only lost one of their last five meetings with the former EFL outfit – although that defeat occurred in our last visit to Plainmoor in October 2024.
THE OPPOSITION
Once again, Torquay have emerged as early National League South title contenders after a typically strong start to the campaign.
The Gulls currently sit six points behind table toppers Hornchurch and are enjoying a run of three league wins on the trot.

Paul Wotton and his players missed out on the title and automatic promotion into the fifth tier by the finest of margins last year, as they finished level on points with eventual league winners and neighbours Truro City. Torquay fell short by a matter of a couple goals – as they scored two less than Truro’s 75, while also conceding the same amount.
The subsequent play-off campaign saw them bow out of the race for the other promotion spot with a whimper, falling to a 1-0 home defeat to eventual play-off winners Boreham Wood.
This is Torquay’s third consecutive season at this level of the pyramid, following a sustained period in the National League. Their first season back at this level saw them narrowly avoid relegation as they dealt with an eleven point deduction, before a desperately unlucky end to last year’s melodramatic title race.
THE GAFFER
Plymouth Argyle legend Paul Wotton has overseen a largely successful period since being hired in May 2024.

A valiant effort in the title race in his first full season in charge deservedly earned him the right to continue his work at Plainmoor.
Prior to joining the Gulls, Wotton spent five years with Truro City. Promotion into the National League South was achieved under his stewardship as they won the Southern League Premier Division South play-offs. Suitors naturally came calling following an extended period of achievement and his services were snapped up by Torquay. Ironically and somewhat unfortunately for the 48-year-old, his former club marginally pipped him to the title 12 months later.
Wotton is regarded as one of the most successful captain in Plymouth’s history, as he lifted both the titles League One and League One titles within three seasons. He amassed over 400 appearances for the Pilgrims, breaking into the top ten of the club’s all-time appearance list in the process, while also winning their Player of the Year award twice. An induction into the club’s Hall of Fame swiftly followed and the Englishman currently sits joint-second in the list of most appearances in their history.
The former central defender then spent three seasons with Southampton, winning the Football League Trophy at Wembley Stadium during the 2009/10 season. Towards the end of his time at St Mary’s Stadium, he was loaned out to Oxford United and Yeovil Town before joining the latter permanently.
ONE TO WATCH
Jordan Young is the prime competitor in the Golden Boot race with our very own Brad Dolaghan, as they are the only two players to have netted double figures so far this season.
Young trails our number 21 by one goal, as he netted goals nine and ten of the season in Saturday’s 7-0 dismantling of Eastbourne Borough.
Alongside his impressive goal tally, the winger has also registered a staggering eight assists for his teammates this term, with two of those also being notched on the weekend.
Last season, Young’s threat was also prevalent, as he racked up 10 goals and 10 assists in 33 appearances, including striking the first equaliser in February’s entertaining 2-2 draw at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium.

The 26-year-old arrived at the shores of the English Riviera after parting ways with Yeovil Town during the early stages of the campaign.
Young has also featured for Chippenham Town, Gloucester City and Swindon Town during his career.
