The Club That George Built

After a life-changing accident, George Dowell finds his purpose by using part of his compensation money to transform the fortunes of his local club.

The film documents George’s first-hand account of living with disability, whilst pursuing a career and fighting for promotion in the leagues for his club. Candid interviews with George, his family and his community show the impact of his work efforts on his personal life.

The new film that follows George, who made the bold decision to purchase Worthing Football Club in 2015 after a devastating car accident – charting his determination to transform his local club after saving it from financial ruin.

George details his life before the accident as a football-obsessed young man playing for the Club and explains how his life was changed forever when the injuries he sustained left him paralysed from the chest down. After the accident, George sought a purpose and focus for his day-to-day life, so he chose to use his insurance settlement money to save the club he loved from its debt and possible dissolution.

The film documents George’s time as owner, which includes two promotions, lifting the Reds to National League South, the highest level in the club’s history.

This unprecedented progress reflects George’s vision to revitalise both the club’s facilities and community ethos, whilst create a platform to enable the club to grow sustainably, within its means.

There's still plenty that you can go and achieve after a massive setback if you're passionate about something. It might be slightly different to how you dreamt but if you love something, there's no reason you can't find a way to make it work for you.
